James E. Morris MSEd. CADC presents his book, Free Air Clinic: Your Guide To Stop Smoking! a self-help project in the healthcare sector, designed to help smokers make quitting easier.
Lodi, WI (PRWEB) July 9, 2004 -
Â? Cigarette smoking has been identified as the most important source of preventable morbidity and premature mortality worldwide. Smoking is responsible for approximately one in five deaths in the United States. From 1995 to 1999, smoking killed over 440,000 people in the United States each year. Excluding adult deaths from exposure to secondhand smoke, adult males and females lost an average of 13.2 and 14.5 years of life respectively, due to smoking. These are facts quoted directly from the American Lung Association.
Meanwhile, there is a current trend (worldwide) to ban smoking in public facilities. On January 1, 2004, The Netherlands Â? well known for its tolerance of smoking and legalized age of sixteen for cigarette purchase Â? prohibited smoking in the workplace, on trains, and in public buildings. This has recently become the law in Switzerland and Norway.
Morris’ Free Air Clinic is a manual developed upon this fast-moving growth of health consciousness. Published books on the subject ask the reader to decide why he or she wants to stop smoking. Free Air Clinic asks the reader to seek within the reasons why he or she smokes in the first place. Free Air Clinic provides a worksheet to help the buyer recognize habit use and to deal with it on this basic level. Never does Morris state there are easy steps to quitting.
And, finally, Free Air Clinic targets men and women with more than just tips on how to avoid weight gain. The appendixes to this book provides tables and blank areas for the buyer to fill in with his or her own personal experience, thoughts, difficulties, and successes coinciding with the relative chapter.
Chapter four on relaxation and stress provides instructions on physical exercise routines designed to alleviate frustration and lessen the need for nicotine. This is Morris’ stress inoculation course.
In the first section, tobacco users are presented
with several very attainable goals that lead to quitting for good. They learn what type of smoker they are, the triggers that keep them using, and dealing with other smokers.
The second section provides more answers to problems that arise after someone has given up tobacco. It also offers a month long daily maintenance that serves as a sort of companion to get him or her through the rough spots.
Morris produced his book on the basis of creating the next best thing to actual one on one counseling. Over the years, he has spent considerable time and effort creating material to help others stop using drugs. He has a B.S. in Psychology and an M.SEd in Counseling Psychology. He was a licensed and certified drug abuse counselor (IAODAPCA) for fifteen years until retirement.
This manual is a culmination of the methods he has used, much of it based on cognitive behavioral techniques.
